Founded by Richard Shipley in 1972, Shipley Associates provided skilled
writing, proposal, and presentation training. Richard often said, "Good writing
is just good thinking made visible; poor writing is just evidence of poor
thinking." Today, the same concepts apply for Steve Shipley, President and CEO,
whose mission is to help clients win more business.
In the 1980s, Steve Shipley began the business development/proposal
division of Shipley Associates. In the 1990s, Shipley offerings included written
communication services for developing federal proposals, environmental
documents, pharmaceutical documentation, quality management curricula, and
strategic business development documents. In 1992, Richard Shipley was named
"Small Business Person of the Year," by the U.S. Small Business Administration
in Washington D.C. The firm matured into one of the leaders in the training
industry.
In February 1994, Shipley Associates sold its business to Franklin
Quest, a training giant and New York Stock Exchange corporation. As Franklin
Quest Consulting Group, the (former) Shipley organization continued its
tradition of helping clients realize the importance of the intellectual
processes behind written and oral communication.
In 1997, Franklin Quest merged with Covey Leadership Center. The former
Shipley organization seemed to no longer match Franklin Covey's core business
strategy. Sensing this, Steve Shipley approached the Franklin Covey management
team about a split. Steve Shipley proposed purchasing the business development
services portion of the former Shipley Associates. In September of 1997, Shipley
Associates opened its doors in Farmington, Utah.
With an ownership group composed of the seven key business development
sales and consulting professionals from the original organization, Shipley
Associates quickly grew to more the 200 consultants as well as 20 support staff.
Togerther with its licensees Shipley Ltd., the company's United Kingdom
licensee, Shipley Nordic and Shipley Australia Shipley products are sold
globally.
